EU-controlled windscreen wash and demisting? Is there something they don’t want you to see?

Starmer’s latest EU sovereignty surrender will put up car prices in GB, after £4,000 hike in N.I.

Once again the Government are acting by ‘Statutory Instrument’, with no Parliamentary debate

On Monday a handful of MPs led by Jim Allister attempted to stop Sir Keir’s latest sovereignty sell-out. Under cover of ‘Statutory Instrument’ the Government has introduced regulations to align GB Vehicle Type Approval with that of the EU.

Unlike the changes announced recently under EU law to cars where they will cost £4,000 more in Northern Ireland than in GB, these new measures are not compulsory to be introduced into England, Scotland and Wales.

Despite there being no legal requirement, this time the Government has elected to align all four nations of the UK with the EU’s regulations.

Now the EU want to control our windscreen wipers and demisting – where will we ever see the end of it?

The new measures relate to:

  • Windscreen wash and de-misting standards
  • Automated emergency calls when a car is involved in an accident, and
  • The level of carbon emissions a vehicle produces

Speaking exclusively to Stand for Our Sovereignty, Jim Allister KC MP told us:

“We all know from the news only last week that the EU’s new regulations on sales of new cars in Northern Ireland will result in them costing £4,000 more in the Province than on mainland GB.

No-one has yet been able to put a cost on these latest changes for cars in Great Britain, but everyone knows nothing comes for free.”

On Tuesday in Parliament a small number of MPs led by Mr Allister signed a motion to try to annul this further alignment with the EU on measures which will cost the consumer undisclosed amounts. This motion will be heard after the summer recess.

How changes in EU vehicle specifications can impact prices

Below is the representative from the National Franchised Dealer Association, telling members of the Northern Ireland Assembly Commission about the impact of having new EU vehicle specifications imposed on their members. We have started the video at the point where he highlights the extraordinary £4,000 increase in car prices caused byb the EU’s new regulation. This lasts for only a minute.

This is now about the cost of vehicles in mainland GB, not only Northern Ireland

Like the last three, these next three regulations are also designed to align with those of the EU, but this time for mainland Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales.

This is all part of Sir Keir Starmer’s ‘EU Re-set’ policy of continuously aligning the UK every more closely with EU law. His government is doing this by stealth, each time with a few regulations here and a few there, and these are being pushed through Parliament using Statutory Instruments. This means there is no debate and little publicity.

– Jim Allister KC MP,
commenting to Stand for Our Sovereignty,
24 July 2025

“This is why the new Stand for Our Sovereignty organisation is so important. You are able to highlight this for your Members and for the general public. Fortunately there are some elements of the media such as GB News who then pick up on your reporting of the Government’s semi-clandestine moves to suck the entire country back into the EU.”

“And thanks to you, the general public are becoming more and more aware of how the EU has split our country into two. When these differences are highlighted, the Government’s response is to make GB like Northern Ireland, under EU laws over which the public’s elected representatives like me have no say. What they should be doing is righting the injustice, re-uniting the country, and fixing the immigration crisis.”

Windscreen wash and de-misting? What will the EU interfere with next?

As an independent country, the UK is member of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The UK is a contracting party to the UNECE’s 1958 Agreement, Revision 3. This is an international agreement relating to reciprocal recognition of vehicle approvals. Under this agreement, the EU is obliged to accept standards of another contracting party. There should therefore be no need for the UK to have to align with EU standards, but rather to rely on its own.

There are three new regulations

The last three applied only to Northern Ireland, imposed by the EU, and they added £4,000 to the cost of a new car in N.I. As Jim Allister points out, this is not only an economic disaster for the industry, it also has the effect of dividing the UK’s single market, contrary to Section 46 of the Internal Market Act 2020, undermining the economic foundation of the UK.

Commenting, Stand for Our Sovereignty Vice Chairman, Ben Philips, said:

– Ben Philips, 24 July 2025

“There are millions of members of the public who are deeply unhappy with this Government’s actions on many domestic issues. Here we have another classic example of its focus on getting us back into the EU as quickly and quietly as possible. These issues today stem from the ever-more obvious fact that the EU has split the United Kingdom, contrary to a great many international laws and treaties.

“They seem more focused on aligning us all with the EU than they are on fixing the immigration crisis which is now reaching boiling point in many communities across the country.”

The democratic deficit is widening every day

The continual alignment with the EU isn’t the only problem, as Stand for Our Sovereignty’s other Vice-Chairman explains.

– Claire Bullivant, Vice-Chairman,
Stand for Our Sovereignty,
24 July 2025

“This also highlights the erosion of our democracy and the widening democratic deficit,” says Claire Bullivant.

“The voting public elect their MPs expecting them to represent them and debate issues like these. The Government doesn’t hold a mandate for any of this. Labour was only supported by 20% of the voting public at the 2024 general election and even then there is nothing in its manifesto about an agenda of aligning us permanently with EU laws and regulations.

“One of the biggest problems is the way they’re doing this. So much is being done using things like Statutory Instruments over which our MPs have no say and about which the Government allows no debate in Parliament.

“We represent the millions who have no say and feel they’re just not being listened to. The more who join us, the louder our voice and the more able we’ll be able to stop this. I urge all right-minded people to join us today. Enough is enough. Let’s start putting this right!”

Observations

It seems that barely a week goes by without some further revelation about this Government and its determination to relinquish more and more control to Brussels and other international bodies. Meanwhile the country is growing increasingly restless over the immigration crisis and in some areas there is a real danger of this boiling over.

It seems obvious to us now that Stand for Our Sovereignty came along at exactly the right time. As we continue to grow, so we will be able to use the influence and expertise which underpins us to start making our presence felt by this Government. Perhaps this will then start to focus their minds back on to the ‘day-job’ of running the country.
